Sundown

Privacy and Audio

Understand what Sundown stores, what stays local, and how audio is handled.

Privacy and Audio

Sundown is privacy-first, but the default product experience is now cloud-first. That means Sundown Cloud is the simplest way to keep captures in sync, while still giving you clear control over what is stored, what stays local, and when audio is retained.

Defaults

  • Capture succeeds on-device first, even when sync has to wait.
  • Sundown Cloud is the default sync path for transcripts and generated day views.
  • Audio retention is opt-in and defaults off.
  • AI and external processing are explicit choices.

Audio

Your saved transcript is the thing Sundown uses to build timeline entries, day views, summaries, and exports. Audio is a sensitive artifact and is not retained unless you turn that on deliberately.

If audio retention is off, Sundown can still keep the transcript and synced day content available without pretending the raw recording is still there.

Why this matters

The app stays understandable even if a third-party service has an outage or you decide to change how Sundown handles syncing later.
